Peter
Williams successfully ran sports holidays
for 12 years from his former establishment,
the recently demolished Pengwern Hotel,
Shrewsbury before moving in October 1997.
His new base is the recently renovated Halfway
House Inn, situated just over a mile from
Bridgnorth town centre, on the B4363 to
Cleobury Mortimer, which was the old main
road between Worcester & Shrewsbury.
See the Map page
for further details of where we are.
It
is a 16th Century Inn, of some notoriety,
mainly in relation to after hours drinking
offences & the new proprietor is proud
to be continuing the tradition, well into
the early hours although restricted to residents
& their bona fide guests. The Inn was
first licensed in 1620 & was originally
known as the Old Red Lion Inn. The name
was changed to The Halfway House following
a visit by Princess Victoria in 1823. Whilst on a stop to change horses en route from Pitchford Hall near Shrewsbury & Great Witley Court near Worcester, she
asked where she was. The reply was given "halfway there".
Since
this date the Inn has been known by its'
present name. The oldest part of the building
also boasts a wonderful example of an Elizabethan
wall mural that has been preserved behind
glass for all to see.
The
popularity of the Halfway House as a venue
for a Stag and Hen Weekends stems from the
fact that each groups itinerary is
tailor-made to their own requirements &
the entire weekend is hosted by Peter or
one of his Halfway House staff. The hassle
& stress are thus removed from the organiser
whether best man, groom or bride allowing
the whole group to get on & party. The
weekends are especially designed for groups
from a professional background the wrong
side of 25 who require their creature comforts
as well as a good old fashioned "p**s-up".
Pengwern
Sports Tours are perhaps unique in providing
a fully inclusive package of activities
with the main emphasis on providing a fun
packed, energetic weekend, in an informal
but safe environment. Groups can enjoy a
drink (or three) a selection of activities,
accommodation, all meals & most importantly
transport in the companys mini-bus
& people carriers. Once visitors
cars arrive they are not allowed to be touched
before departure which is usually well into
the Sunday afternoon.
After
the Friday night alcohol tolerance training
session, Saturday morning is spent out in
the fresh air. Choose from either a session
of Quad Trekking followed by a competition
around an obstacle course, Grand Prix Carting,
Clay Pigeon Shooting or Paintballing &
this will be followed by lunch & an
optional afternoon activity. The process
is repeated on Sunday morning with Kayaking
down the River Severn followed by a trip
on the Severn Valley Steam Railway or a
game of Golf tailored to both serious players
or "hackers" as the case may be.
A roast lunch or a BBQ finishes off the
weekend & is the ideal antidote to the
combined excesses of the Friday & Saturday
nights. Indoor activities such as Indoor
Archery, Go Carting, Ice Skating or Ten
Pin Bowling are suitable alternatives in
the case of bad weather.
Before
taking over the Halfway House Inn in October
1997, Peter was owner of the Pengwern Hotel
in Shrewsbury for over 15 years. Over that
period, he hosted many successful stag &
hen weekends especially for groups the wrong
side of 25 who require their creature comforts
as well as a good old-fashioned "piss-up".
We pride ourselves in providing a fun packed
few days that will be both adventurous &
enjoyable for you & your guests. We
always endeavour to match up suitable stag
& hen groups from roughly the same social
strata & company will always be on hand.
We
are also well known for both the quality
& quantity of our food & there is
normally a nightly three course Gourmet
Dinner included in the price plus a Saturday
pub lunch or packed lunch & a Traditional
Sunday Roast Meal or a Barbecue if the weather
is suitable (group bookings). Meal times
are arranged to suit the days activities
& the bar remains open until around
3 a.m. or as long as there is enough action
to keep the barman awake.
The
final price per person will be arranged
with each group to take into account the
number of people sharing each cottage or
en-suite room. The initial quotation will
be based on six sharing Victoria, six or
seven sharing Coach & five sharing Mural
Cottages, seven sharing Orchard Bungalow
& three sharing the rooms in the Inn
itself. The other rooms can only be included
when they are nearer completion.
